Katherine's House and Rita's House

Katherine's House and Rita's House are innovative transitional housing programs of Catholic Community Services. With the proven success of Katherine's House and the generosity of our community, a second program - Rita's House, opened in December 2008. Katherine's House and Rita's House serve homeless, adult women in recovery from substance abuse. Program staff and volunteers offer structured, family-style living designed to assist women in returning to independent living as productive members of the community.Residents of both houses may stay up to two years.

While there, each resident develops a personal success plan tailored to her individual needs. Our primary goals are to help these women find permanent, affordable housing, maintain sobriety, and reduce recidivism rates. 90% of women exiting the program in 2009 found affordable housing, have remained sober six months or more, and have not returned to jail.

Rita's House:  A Graduate

This is the true story of a woman who had 9 years of sobriety before her relapse almost killed her.  She overdosed, was hospitalized, and then found herself in a hotel.  Admitted to Rita's House, this woman had to address the shame of addiction and incarcerations and how others viewed her.  Worse, she felt the failure of having had such a long stint of recovery, of being a support to others in recovery, and then falling so far.  But this woman went far beyond expectations.  She accepted her new recovery.  She went to therapy to address sexual abuse issues.  She cleaned up her credit.  As her time with us grew, she got an internship with Habitat for Humanity and regained the confidence of being employed.  Today, this woman continues in her sobriety (over 2 years), has graduated from our program and moved into a market rate apartment, and has been employed full time for almost a year. She keeps in regular contact with staff, providing inspiration for other Katherine's & Rita's House residents following their own paths to sobriety and success.
